What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is the evaluation and treatment of numerous physical and neurological conditions in all age groups. Physical Therapy aims to restore movement, relieve pain, improve function, and prevent illness/injury. Physical therapy is also active in the treatment of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, sports medicine, skin disorders, overall fitness and health.

Who is a physical therapist?

A physical therapist is one member of the health care team that might include  a physician, nurse, social worker, speech therapist, vocational counselor, psychologist, protetist, or orthotist. A registered physical therapist (RPT) has completed training and graduated from an accredited school of physical therapy where they received a bachelor or master of science degree.  They are also required to pass the state examination and be licensed in the state in which they practice.

What does a Physical therapist do?

A physical therapist will first perform an evaluation of your problem. This includes taking a history of the problem and then evaluating your problem by performing tests and measures. These tests may include strength tests, join motion tests, sensory and neurological tests, coordination tests, balance tests, observation, palpation, flexibility tests, postural screening, movement analysis, and specific tests designed for a particular problem. The therapist will then develop a treatment plan and goals followed by initiation of treatment for the problem.

Treatment may include:

  • Patient education
  • Massage
  • Joint mobilization
  • Therapeutic exercise for improvement of strength
  • Range of joint motion
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Functional training activities
  • Use of modalities to help decrease pain
